Topic Overview:
The fourth-grade section of the Aves Compartidas Environmental Education program aims to cultivate knowledge of terrestrial migratory birds through activity-based learning.
Highlighted Bird Species:
- Yellow Warbler (Chipe Amarillo)
- Black-throated Gray Warbler (Chipe Negrogris)
- Western Tanager (Piranga Capucha Roja)
- Wilson’s Warbler (Chipe Corona Negra)
- Burrowing Owl (Tecolote Llanero)
- Swainson’s Thrush (Zorzal de Antejos)
Methods:
The Aves Compartidas team has created a series of seven lesson plans focused on learning about terrestrial birds who migrate between Eugene, Oregon and Guanajuato, Mexico. These lesson plans are typically covered with both English and Spanish vocabulary and include a species highlight, where we introduce a new bird each week, and a larger activity. The curriculum that we have created is helping students to develop observation skills, geography knowledge, a better understanding of the life cycle of a bird, a good use of binoculars, and more, all in order to complete the final quest. The quest is a scavenger hunt created by the team in hopes of recalling the accumulated knowledge of the students from the total seven weeks.
